Sophie, that's a really good observation about the placement of the timestamp. Lauren wrote me that she used a program called Soundslides to create the show, so now we just have to get *them* to pay attention. :)

And thanks for the report on the TNC video. That's long for sure, but not impossibly so. I might have watched the whole thing if I had had a sense that I was making progress!

Nice examples, Kira. I'm impressed by how quickly Empax incorporated your feedback!

Another element that kqed's audio slideshow could borrow from video players is the placement of the timestamp. Most video players include the timestamp above the position indicator so that as you move the indicator, the elapsed time changes along with it. Nice to provide the feedback within the user's navigation area (I initially missed that the time was changing off to the right-hand side as I moved the indicator).

By the way, TNC's video is ~5m looooooong, though very interesting :)

Veronica, thanks so much for stopping by. I'm impressed by how quickly your team was able to add controls!

One further comment -- people will differ on this, but my opinion is that this multimedia feature is so strong that you can autoplay it and just give people the option to stop or pause it. (The praise it got on Progressive Exchange would suggest that I'm not alone in that.)

Again, thanks for listening, and great job!

Kira,

First off, thank you for your comments and praise of Empax's homepage multimedia. It was clearly a labor of love, something we are all proud of, and a piece that represents us and the work we do for the nonprofit sector.

Now, for the real thanks: Your comments about how the slideshow could stand to be improved were invaluable to us. If you take a look now, you will notice that your suggestions have all been implemented. While we certainly pride ourselves on our creative abilities, we are never above taking constructive criticism, and are always open to hearing ways in which we can improve. After all, listening to your users is one of the things we are constantly advocating to our clients.

So, without further adieu, I invite you to watch the new and improved Empax slideshow! www.empax.org Enjoy.
